ABOUT OUR ʻIOLANI PRINT

There is power in our names. More than just titles of our identity, our names are rich with meaning and heritage. From them, stem our stories — tracing the fragrances of our successes to the strong roots of our ancestors. Understanding the legacies from which we bloom from gives us the audacity to not just be who we are meant to be, but who they dreamt us to become. There is power in our names.

‘Iolani is a reign-inspired suite that honors my father, ‘Iolani Kamauu. Having been given the name ‘Iolani from esteemed kumu hula and his great aunt, Aunty ‘Iolani Luahine, My dad lives his life honoring his Aunty by instilling in his children a love for hula that traces back to her and her legacy.

This ‘Iolani print is rich with meaning and heritage. Embedded in the left side of the repeating diamond found in this print lay “lines of legacy" that trace the cordings and carvings found on aunty ʻIo’s pahu drum. It was King David Kalākaua who proclaimed, “Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.” In Hula, we, as dancers, are led by the beat of our Kumuʻs pahu. It is steady. Strong. And true. These lines of legacy represent the heartbeat of my Fatherʻs, my grandmotherʻs and my great-great auntʻs  hula Lineage. It is strong. It is steady. And it is true.

Found mirrored on the right is the subtle return of our Noelani graphic element that was previously designed to embody my mother, Natalie Noelani. It is rare to ever find them apart. This diamond is symbolic of their love, their marriage, and their collective audacity to fuze their hula family legacies into one.

It is my hope that by honoring my father, his name, and his legacy through this Suite I can truly live up to the name he entrusted me with…. ‘Iolani. There is power in our name.
