Translating to mean ‘Heavenly Mist,’ Noelani is a rain-inspired collection created to honor my mother, Natalie Noelani.
Our Noelani print is lush with symbolism and significance. Although the Pua Kīele, or gardenia, is my favorite flower, it has always reminded me of my great-grandmother, Angeline Kauhiwai, whose Kāneʻohe home was fenced with a blossoming hedge. Because she was named after the heavy mist of Waimea, dew-laden gardenia flowers drench this print in similitude of her. The blanketing, gradient triangles are another expression of noelani and the way she falls. The two layers of this graphic element each represent my Sister, named after the Kiowao rain that falls in Nu’uanu, and my niece, Kauhiwailani.
It is my hope that by drawing inspiration from my mother’s grandmother, daughter and granddaughter, and infusing them within this print, I can truly honor her, her name and her legacy.
